Just following up from this article published this morning in the Independent on Sunday, a leading British newspaper.
If you were born in the UK between 1940 and 1971
please ask your mother if she was ever prescribed DES or
Diethylstilboestrol while pregnant.
DES is a chemical that we touch on in the film. In a nutshell, DES was widely prescribed as a drug that could prevent miscarriage, but has now shown to be widely linked to daughters of mothers given this drug, going on to develop rare cancers of the vagina, upper uterus and other cancers of the reproductive organs.
This article does a great job in outlining the concerns, which is discussed in the film, but the reason why this is important is because an early diagnosis of these diseases lead to a much better prognosis. In simple terms, early detection can save your life. If your mother was prescribed this drug, then you need to know the symptoms and you need to be regularly checked. I’m not being a scaremonger-this is really important.
